Central and South America

I decided to start these next couple weeks off with my all time favorite animal. SLOTHS!

These little guys can be found in the trees of Central and South America.

Other than where we come from, sloths and I have quite a bit in common. For instance, our hair. Sloth hair is long, coarse and basically out of control. If you know me or have had the great opportunity to see me around campus you'd understand how we share this characteristic. Fortunately for sloths, this feature is a positive one. Organisms, ranging from moths, beetles, cockroaches to fungi and algae basically live on sloths and in their hair. Since sloths serve as a home to a variety of creatures, in return they provide them with camouflage and extra nutrients.

When I'm not out playing softball, there's usually no question as to where I am... my bed. I'm a huge homebody who really enjoys laying around and taking nice, LOOONNG naps. Sloths take part in similar activities as well. In most cases, the same sloth can be found in the same tree for years at a time. They're also known for sleeping for up to 18 consecutive hours.

Sloths need very little food and feed on fruit, leaves and small twigs. In exception to chocolate, my food intake is small too. Sloths are also nocturnal animals, only moving around (slowly) at night. Although I love my sleep, I seem to be a night owl as well.

Wow, who knew you could learn so much about yourself by comparing your life to an animal's!?

Anyways, if I couldn't persuade you before, this video should do it! So adorable!

  2. This sloth...the cuteness meter just went through the roof! I'm looking forward reading your other posts. I'm curious- have you seen the way Kristen Bell reacts to sloths? She is pretty crazy about them.
